I have been cold calling businesses trying to sell them SEO and Web Design and I can't telemarket to save my life.

Here's a list of mistakes I made.

1. I called the same business back to back because lawyers think they need twenty yellow page ads each.

2. I asked a guy from California (Im in Ohio) to meet me to go over some graphs.

3.  I used a canned speech which made things good for leaving messages but bad for actual conversions.

And here's a list of some things that made me chuckle.

1. A lawyer told me 1K was too expensive.

2. A plumbing and heating owner told me they Googled themselves and they had no trouble finding their business.

Ok I lied.

I lied. I was supposed to post awesome seo secrets on a seo blog yesterday but i didn't. I'm going to post them on this blog instead. Take that deadlines!

Got Smacked; Penguin 4.0 Released

We were pretty sad yesterday, after getting the number one search result in Google for the keywords "Bucyrus website design" in a lightning fast five days, we got smacked by Google, then removed completely from the search engine. Luckily we're prepared for things like that and after doing the magic rain dance of Google, we're back to number one again. This time I think we'll stay there for a little longer than twenty four hours.

Proof

right now is an under construction page because our designer is super religious and doesn't want people to watch him get dressed, so for you night owls there's not much to see, but in four hours or so we'll be going live.

As a side note penguin was updated today, so if you're using spam to game your search results you might want to run a few searches to see if it's still working.

Demystifying Internet Marketing

A lot of folks I talk to say, yeah-you can give me the number one spot in Google, but no one will search for my product or service. Luckily it's easy to disprove. A lot of people don't realize it, but Google makes their money with SEO. Google has a product called AdWords (it brings in about forty billion a year.)  It's the paid results with a yellow background that show up in the top or right of a Google search.

Luckily for me Google has had the same problem when trying to sell their AdWords product. People don't understand how many potential customers they are missing out on. But by using the Google Adwords Keyword Research tool we can find out exactly how many potential customers are searching for a certain keyword each month.

So say you're a local dress maker and I'm trying to convince you that you'll double your business if your the first result on Google for Columbus Dress but you're not sure how many people search for Columbus Dress. I'll tell you how many: 8,100 a month.

Now we can assume most people searching for Columbus dress are pretty close to buying a dress in Columbus and are actively looking for a business to complete this transaction. Now let me ask you a question. Why would you pay for a billboard, TV or radio ad, when for the same price, you can connect with 8,100 potential customers a month who are very motivated to buy your product or a competing product? Think about that.

Is Marketing Important? (Or how to make a five minute sales pitch without feeling like a schmuck)

Marketing is the most important thing you can do for your business. It's been proven time and time again by snake oil salesman and true believers alike,  if your marketing strategy is good enough it's possible to make money hand over fist with a total crap product. Similarly a lot of great products have fallen by the wayside without proper marketing.

Let me tell you this:

It's not a fad that you'll outlive. It's big businesses and it's here to stay.

If you haven't thought about how the internet can improve your marketing strategy then you're missing out on a lot of potential business.
